For best results, plant in well-draining soil enriched with compost or organic matter to support strong root development and healthy growth. Choose varieties suited to your space and light conditions, and water consistently to encourage abundant blooms. Spring
  • Uncover roses (late April to early May).
  • Prune dead/damaged canes just as buds swell.
  • Fertilize with balanced rose fertilizer (10-10-10 or 5-10-5).
  • Apply mulch to retain moisture & regulate soil temp.

Summer
  • June–August, water deeply once a week, more often in heat.
  • Deadhead spent blooms to encourage reblooming.
  • Watch for black spot, powdery mildew, and Japanese beetles.

Fall
  • September–October, stop fertilizing in mid-August to help plants harden off.
  • Remove diseased foliage to prevent overwintering pests.

Winter
  • November–March, hill soil or mulch 12–18" over crown for tender varieties.
  • Consider burlap wrapping or rose cones for Hybrid Teas.
  • Rugosa and Explorer roses may need no protection.
