Perennials

🌱 Perennial Care Guide (Gatineau/Ottawa)

All perennials at Nesbitt’s are suitable for hardiness zones 1 through 5. This means they are selected to withstand a wide range of colder climates and seasonal temperature variations in our region.

Perennials are expected to return year after year when planted in the right conditions. To support strong root development and long-term performance, use well-draining soil and enrich with compost or peat moss. Choosing the right plant for your garden’s light and soil will help ensure reliable growth and consistent blooms each season.

Spring

  • Plant perennials once the ground has thawed and planting conditions are workable.
  • If transplanting into a garden bed or changing soil, mix in compost to support root establishment.
  • Water thoroughly after planting to settle soil around the roots.
  • Begin fertilizing with a balanced perennial fertilizer as new growth appears.

Summer

  • June–August, water regularly during establishment and extended dry periods.
  • Monitor for signs of heat or moisture stress during active growth and flowering.
  • Deadhead or prune lightly to encourage continued blooming where applicable.
  • Fertilize if planted in new or amended soil to support healthy growth and flowering.

Fall

  • September–October, continue deep watering as plants prepare for dormancy.
  • Stop fertilizing to allow plants to harden off before winter.
  • Cut back only dead or diseased growth unless otherwise recommended.
  • Mulch the base to protect roots and help regulate soil moisture.

Winter

  • November–March, most perennials remain dormant below ground.
  • Leave stems in place if recommended for winter protection or wildlife.
  • Use winter months to plan garden layout and plant combinations for spring.
