Welcome to our new site
Matteuccia struthiopteris, commonly known as Ostrich Fern, is a graceful and architectural perennial prized for its tall, feathery fronds that resemble elegant ostrich plumes. Emerging fresh green in spring, the finely divided sterile fronds unfurl in a vase-like form before gently arching outward, creating a lush, naturalistic presence in shaded or moist garden areas. As the season progresses, the foliage softens and eventually dies back in fall, while the shorter, upright fertile fronds turn a rich brown and persist through winter for added interest. Low-maintenance and resistant to pests and diseases, Ostrich Fern is an excellent choice for woodland or bog gardens, where it thrives in consistently moist soil and brings texture, movement, and timeless beauty to the landscape.

🌱 Perennial Care Guide (Gatineau/Ottawa)
All perennials at Nesbitt’s are suitable for hardiness zones 1 through 5. This means they are selected to withstand a wide range of colder climates and seasonal temperature variations in our region.
Perennials are expected to return year after year when planted in the right conditions. To support strong root development and long-term performance, use well-draining soil and enrich with compost or peat moss. Choosing the right plant for your garden’s light and soil will help ensure reliable growth and consistent blooms each season.
