🌱 Climbers Care Guide

Climbing plants add height, structure, and visual interest to gardens, fences, and trellises. With proper support and care, they develop strong growth and beautiful coverage.

For best results, plant in well-draining soil enriched with compost or peat moss to support healthy roots and vigorous vines. Provide a suitable structure for climbing and guide new growth as it establishes. Choose varieties suited to your garden’s light conditions, and water regularly to encourage strong development and consistent flowering.

Spring

  • Plant climbers after the risk of frost has passed.
  • If transplanting into a garden bed or changing soil, mix in compost to improve structure.
  • Install trellises, arbors, or supports at planting time to avoid root disturbance later.
  • Begin fertilizing with a balanced fertilizer once new growth appears, especially in amended soil.

Summer

  • June–August, water regularly during establishment and dry periods.
  • Guide new shoots onto supports to encourage proper climbing and coverage.
  • Prune lightly to control size and shape as needed.
  • Fertilize every 3–4 weeks if planted in new or enriched soil to support flowering and growth.

Fall

  • September–October, continue watering until the ground begins to cool.
  • Reduce fertilizing as growth slows.
  • Prune only dead or damaged growth unless the variety requires fall pruning.
  • Mulch the base to help protect roots from temperature fluctuations.

Winter

  • November–March, most climbers go dormant during winter months.
  • Leave supports in place and avoid pruning unless recommended for the species.
  • Check winter protection on tender varieties.
  • Use winter to plan support structures and placement for next season’s growth.
